President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on eight European NATO states for opposing his plan to acquire Greenland
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has denounced US tariff threats, calling them "blackmail" against his country and its allies.
The comment comes in response to Washington hitting eight European NATO nations with import duties for opposing US President Donald Trump's plans to acquire the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland.
On Friday, Trump said he would impose a 10% levy on US imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1. He stressed that the tariffs would rise to 25% in June, and remain in place until a "complete and total purchase" of the Arctic island is achieved.
"We will not be blackmailed," Kristersson wrote Saturday in a post on X, stressing that Copenhagen is currently discussing the matter with other EU countries, Norway, and the UK to coordinate a joint response.
"Only Denmark and Greenland decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland. I will always stand up for my country and for our allied neighbors," he said, highlighting that the issue "affects many more countries than those currently being singled out."
The NATO countries hit by the tariffs recently joined Denmark in sending small military contingents to Greenland, symbolically affirming the island's sovereignty. Both Danish and Greenlandic authorities have stressed the territory is not for sale, noting that a vote in 2008 confirmed continued autonomy under Denmark.
Trump's move drew strong criticism in Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron called the tariff threats unacceptable and promised a "united and coordinated" response. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the threats would harm transatlantic ties and reiterated EU solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the tariffs as "completely wrong," saying they undermine NATO, and pledging direct talks with the US.
The US president has recently stepped up efforts to bring Greenland under US control, a goal he has pursued since his first term. Trump argues that the acquisition is crucial for US national security to counter Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic - an assertion rejected by both Beijing and Moscow.
