Second-seeded Luciano Darderi of Italy claimed his fifth career ATP title with a 7-6 (6), 7-5 defeat of Yannick Hanfmann on Sunday in the championship of the BCI Seguros Chile Open in Santiago, Chile.
Darderi, 24, was coming off his first career ATP final loss in the Argentina Open in February, exorcised those demons and ended the German's Cinderella run, improving to 16-2 on clay courts since last July. He was already a career-best No. 21 in the ATP rankings and should jump even further up with his fourth title in the last 12 months. Darderi has the most tour-level clay titles (five) of any player since the start of the 2024 season, breaking a tie with Carlos Alcaraz.
Hanfmann, an unseeded qualifier, was competing in his first ATP final since September 2020, coming up a win short of his first career ATP title.
Darderi had more double faults (3-2) and less aces (10-6). Hanfmann also had twice as many winners (30-15) but also twice as many unforced errors (32-16).
The Italian squandered a few first-set chances, blowing a break advantage and 3-0 tiebreaker lead before winning the final two points to claim the opening set. In the second set, Hanfmann broke Darderi to take a 2-1 lead in the second set, but Darderi broke back and then finished the win with a break up 6-5 on his first match point.
